A Faith Community Screening of the Documentary Sugarcane: Friday, January 9, 2026, 6:00 PM - Sanctuary

Saint Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Chandler and the Episcopal Diocese of Arizona’s Council for Native American Ministry invite you to a free screening of, Sugarcane, the award-winning debut feature documentary from Julian Brave NoiseCat and Emily Kassie. This groundbreaking investigation examines an Indian Residential School, shedding light on years of forced separation, assimilation, and abuse experienced by Indigenous children at the hands of Church and government. Urgent and deeply moving, the film brings a hidden history of cultural genocide to audiences worldwide while honoring the strength and resilience of Native people.

Sugarcane premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, where it received the Directing Award: U.S. Documentary, and has since garnered over a dozen awards. Please note that the documentary is rated R.

Following the documentary, all are welcome to join a discussion session with Grandmother Perci and other survivors of the Indian Boarding School Project.
