Follow Me! The Feast Day of Saint Matthew
On September 22, we’ll celebrate the Feast Day of Saint Matthew! Our altar will be dressed in red, a rare occurrence. Red paraments are used during Holy Week to represent the blood of Christ; on Pentecost, church anniversaries, and ordinations to symbolize the Holy Spirit and fire; and on feast days of apostles, evangelists, and saints who were martyrs of faith.
Saint Matthew, for whom our church is named, was a tax collector before he famously heeded Jesus’ call to “Follow Me,” left his prosperous position behind, and became one of the twelve apostles. Often depicted in Christian art with a tax collector's booth or with a pen and book, Matthew is recognized as the author of the Gospel of Matthew and is the patron saint of tax collectors, accountants, and bankers. The Gospel according to Matthew is the first book of the New Testament and provides a detailed account of Jesus' life, teachings, death, and resurrection, emphasizing His role as the Messiah and including significant teachings such as the Sermon on the Mount and the Great Commission.
How can we follow Jesus? Consider putting your time and talents to work with a ministry at Saint Matthew’s. Meet someone new at coffee hour, sign up to read, explore a new ministry, or start one of your own.
Rejoice in the Holy Spirit and follow your calling!
