Serving in our service

One of the most meaningful ways to support our ministry is by serving at a Sunday service. We’re always seeking new volunteers to assist with various roles, from reading scripture to greeting people at the door. Everyone is invited to participate in our worship services. At Saint Matthew's, we encourage parishioners to deepen their connection to our community by taking on roles that enhance and enrich our liturgies.

Lector - Lay Reader

Lectors read scripture lessons and also lead the Psalm or Prayers of the People. We invite parishioners—those who regularly attend Sunday services, receive Communion at least three times a year, and actively participate in the church's life by sharing their time, talent, and treasure—to take part in this meaningful ministry. Adults and youth (9th grade and up) are welcome to serve.

SMECLem

Eucharistic Minister (EM) / Chalice Bearer

A Eucharistic Minister, or Chalice Bearer, helps our priests serve Communion by offering the chalice (the Blood of Christ) to those receiving Holy Communion. Typically, Eucharistic Ministers also serve as Lectors on the same day, but this is not required. We ask that those serving as Eucharistic Ministers be either confirmed or received into the Episcopal Church. Adults and confirmed youth (9th grade and up) are welcome to serve.

Ushers & Greeters

The ushers ministry involves welcoming parishioners as they enter the church, handing out service bulletins, and assisting as needed with seating. Ushers play a critical role during the service by bringing the Communion elements to the altar, and assisting with offertory collection. They are also responsible for releasing communicants to the altar rail for Communion, guiding clergy and laypersons to those needing Communion at their pew, and keeping a count of the number of attendees. After the service, ushers collect used bulletins for recycling, assist with a brief cleanup of the pews, and gather children’s activity bags. In cases of illness or injury, ushers may summon medical help and guide responders to the parishioner.

Crucifer

The Crucifer participates in our worship service by carrying the processional cross during the procession and the reading of the Gospel, symbolizing the centrality of Christ in our lives and worship. Adults and youth, (7th grade and up) are welcome to serve.

Acolytes

Acolytes assist during worship by carrying the Gospel book during the procession and the Gospel reading. Their role adds to the beauty and reverence of the service, ensuring a well-organized flow of the liturgy. Children and youth, (9 years old and up) are welcome to serve.

Music Ministry

All parishioners are invited to give their musical gift to God. Our services are praise, not performance centered and we welcome newcomers with open arms. Our 9:00 service features a traditional choir with piano, organ and handbell music while our 11:00 is more upbeat, featuring a contemporary Christian band.
